Both a noun and a verb, a schmear is anything that can be spread. To schmear something is to spread it, like cream cheese on a bagel.
You can also use schmear to refer to a group of foods, as in: “the whole schmear.”
Examples of schmears include:

- Dips (e.g. hummus)
- Salads (e.g. coleslaw)
- Sauces & Toppings (e.g. ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise)
